NIGHT NAVIGATION RUN - 30 MAY 2008
Ten crews gathered in Mold for the
start of the May Navigation Exercise on a dry and
sunny evening. There were 5 experts and 5 novice
teams out on what proved to be a challenging route.
The route of 28 miles, used yellows to the West and
South of Mold, with sections near Loggerheads,
Maeshafen, Nercwys Mountain and the finish at The
Rose and Crown in Graianrhyd.
The first section consisted of straight forward Map
References with approaches and departs given.
However there were a mixture of fixed markers and
symbols to collect, and some of the clues were a
little cryptic to keep the crews on their toes! The
second section used Spot Heights, with additional
symbols to find along the way, and the final section
used good old fashioned Tulips.
The navigation was further complicated by the fact
that both maps 116 & 117 were used with 8 map
changes during the route. Some crews took longer
than anticipated to plot the route so consequently
were a little pushed to get to the finish by the
10.30 deadline. One crew missed out and were
consequently heavily penalised, much to their
chagrin.
The finish venue proved a great success and most
crews went home happy. Congratulation to Jan &
Graham Thomas for winning overall with maximum
points and Lynn & Dave Barnes close behind and 1st
in Novice class.
Organised by Keith & Tina Cross. |

Popular local driver Ken Pugh finally wins an event on Trawsfynydd Ranges
(report by DVT)
CLWYDIAN CARS STAGES: Organiser:
Clwyd Vale MC When: 17 May Where
Trawsfynydd Ranges Championships: ANWCC,
Trawsfynydd Challenge Stages: 12
Starters: 47
After many years of many top results,
popular local driver Ken Pugh won an event on
Trawsfynydd Ranges! With Gwawr Hughes co-driving
and now in a Lancer they finished just ten seconds
ahead of hard-charging Phil Kendall/Marc Williams (Corsa)
with Gary Edgington/Helen Jones (106 GTI) third –
all three crews gaining their best-ever result!
Top seed Kevin Jones/Ros Goodall were quickest over
the first stage, but then rolled lightly on the
second and retired. Pugh/Hughes took over the lead
which they never relinquished but could not afford
even the slightest error.
The event had many newcomers to the venue, Alan
Kitson/Ron Aspinwall being one such crew, their Imp
taking a comfortable victory in the 1000cc class,
second place was closely fought between the Micras
of husband-wife team Alwyn and Alwena Frazer and
Aled Loveluck/Tomos Parry, just two seconds
separating them.Gareth Roberts/Ian Price (106) took
the 1400cc class, ten seconds up on the Sunbeam of
Arwyn Williams/Steve Jones, Antony Williams/Tim Gill
(Fiesta) third.
The 1600 class had Geoff McQuilling/Rob Hopewell
(Civic) put in a late charge to make up for a sheep
incident, but not quite enough to overall Edgington/Jones,
whilst early class leaders Chris Phillips/Rhys
Hughes (106 GTI) slipped to third due to a poor tyre
choice.
Kendall/Williams took the 2-litre class, next being
Ranges regulars Keith Griffiths/Paul Hughes (Escort)
with the similar car of Richard Lewis/Ifan Rowlands
third. Carwyn Ellis/Edgar Jones (Escort) were in
contention for the first lap of three stages but
failed to restart due to gearbox problems.
With Pugh/Hughes taking the overall win, the big-engined
class went to Jon Madoc-Jones in his Renault 5GT
co-driven by first-timer 17-year-old Josh Thomas.
Jonathan Whalley/Peter Dennis (Escort) were second
ahead of Pete O’Dougherty/Paul Griffiths (Escort Mk4
RWD) who lost out due to a maximum on the last
stage.
Results: 1, Ken
Pugh/Gwawr Hughes (2.0t Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III)
22m 09s; 2, Phil Kendall/Marc Williams (2.0
Vauxhall Corsa) 22m 19s; 3, Gary Edgington/Helen

Night Nav -
Friday 25th April - Organised by Jan & Graham Thomas
Starting in Ruthin and finishing
at The Leyland Arms Llanelidan this promised to use
some of our less frequently used interesting lanes,
another to attract an excellent turn-out of 10
crews.
As to be expected from Graham the plotting was very
tricky causing a lot of head scratching. The night
was split into three sections, first section being
features on the map that the route passed through,
the second the more conventional method of spot
heights and the third a unique box grid system. None
of this foxed the eventual winners who were away
after 35 minutes.
Sections A and B had the usual symbols, hidden in
the usual impossible to see places and, to add some
variety, the third section included clues for the
crews to look-out for.
With all the crews safely back at The Leyland, and
following the usual steward’s inquiry, the results
were announced declaring Father and Son team of Neil
and Rob Lloyd as overall winners.
Next event is to be organised by Tina and Keith
Cross, and if their last one at Christmas is
anything to go by is should be a cracker. (Ignore
the pun)

PlayStation Club
Night
- Wednesday 16th April
"Thanks to all who attended last Wednesday's
PlayStation night. Had 15 people in total which
meant the number of stages had to be cut down from 3
to 2. Big congratulations to Al Hayward after
putting in a fantastic time in the Mini (02:30:18),
some 9 seconds ahead of everybody else. Other
noticeable performances came from Stu Thomas,
winning stage 1 in a VW, and Pat Jones setting a
time that could only be recorded with a calendar!"
Rob Lloyd |
Congratulations
must go to Stuart Thomas who, at a very emotional
time, managed to put on an excellent Dennis Wells
Car Trial despite the best efforts of the 'Welsh weather'
that turned the normally grassy slopes into a muddy
skating rink.
He took over the reigns as Secretary of the Meeting,
with minimal help from his predecessor, got on with
the job and, as far as could be judged
after speaking to competitors, everyone was happy.

Scally Rally 2008
If anyone is
interested there are still a few places left for Scally Rally 2008.
This year there are two events running in September - Calais to
Rimini and Ireland 1000. Although they are not run under MSA
jurisdiction they are run under common sense rules. They are
basically FUN events and an ideal way to promote your favourite
charity. All you need is a £100 banger with MoT and passports for
crew members ( no need to obtain MSA Competition licence )
Road to Rimini ( R2R ) route was used last year and basically runs
across France, Switzerland and Northern Italy using some of the
famous Alpine passes including the Stelvio Pass ( 9000ft).
Scally Rally - Ireland is new this year and is a 1000 mile circuit
of Ireland and will be traversing some of the stages as used on the
WRC. See
www.scallyrally.co.uk for more details.

Appeal
for Radio Operators
SMC Stages
- Sunday 30th March 2008
Dear All,
I am still desperately seeking radio crews for the above event at
the end of the month. This event is usually popular with competitors
and hence usually promises a good number of entries. The organisers
also seem to know the way to the Marshals/Radio Crews hearts and
normally throw a few food vouchers into the radio packs, which are
redeemable at the butty wagon. Please do get in touch if you are
available to come out and do a radio point as your assistance would
be greatly appreciated and of course without it events like this
could not run. Please also pass on the message to others in your
motor club/team. Look forward to hearing from you,
Kind Regards,

Graham Thomas has
passed on this opportunity to get our hands on OS Maps at a reduced
price. For example OS Landranger maps at only £5.24 with FREE
delivery PLUS an extra 5% discount for Clwyd Vale members (according
to my suspect maths, that's less than £5!) . I have had an email
from Mark Jones, General Manager, detailing how club members can

February Club Night:
Scalectrix©
Night (report)
A very successful club night with a strong turnout of nearly 40 club
members and guests with 24 of them braving the track. Stu
Thomas had laid a crossover track with a couple of nasty hairpins that
caught most people out. Indeed, I am sure I saw a few cars trying to
'back it in' at the end of the straights with a scandinavian flick!
Fastest lap in the heats went to Brian Harrison win with a stunning lap
time of 6.8 seconds.
The final run was a head to head between Brian and Paul Davies with
Brian taking the overall win when Paul got the ‘red mist’ and tried to
destroy his car, the track and any spectators ankles that were within
striking distance! A most enjoyable evening full of laughs and many
thanks to Stu Thomas (assisted by his dad Graham on results) for putting
on the event. |
Clwydian Cars Stage Rally (17th May)
Regs
now available
HERE
This year sees the event becoming the inaugural round
of the brand new “ANWCC Trawsfynydd Rally Challenge” which should give added spice
to the competition.
19 Feb: Entries are now starting to come in a month earlier than last
year! looks well set for a full entry. |
20th
February Club Night:
Scalectrix©
Night
Dependant on entries, the plan is to
have time trial knock out stages:
One car on track at a time for a set number of laps. Only your
fastest single lap time counts, and the slowest person((s)
depending on how many enter) in the group is eliminated.
When only two people are left, there will be a best of 3 race head
to head showdown. The track has
been dusted off and a variety of cars from a Seat Cordoba WRC to
Caterham 7's have been logbooked in readiness for a time trial
knockout competition. When two people are left, they will go
head to head in
Porsche GT3's to determine the clubs best racer. |
Farrington Trophy
Road Rally
The Farrington has been
accepted as part of the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs Championships
for 2008.
It seems that the Farrington in 2007 was in line for recognition by
the WAMC but due to a 'technicality' the form did not reach the
committee in time! |
